Communities and Local Government written question – answered at on 15 October 2012.
To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government if he will make it his policy that planning permission granted to people on the basis that they are Travellers, is granted subject to a requirement that those people live a travelling lifestyle.
Following consultation, the Government published its Planning Policy for Traveller Sites in March 2012. This sets out national policy that must be taken into account when local authorities (and Inspectors) decide relevant applications for planning permission. For the purposes of planning policy “Gypsies and Travellers” means persons of nomadic habit of life whatever their race or origin, including such persons who on grounds only of their own or their family's or dependants' educational or health needs or old age have ceased to travel temporarily or permanently, but excluding members of an organised group of travelling showpeople or circus people travelling together as such.
