Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs written question – answered at on 7 September 2012.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what steps his Department is taking following the announcement that people sentenced to death in The Gambia will be executed in September; and if he will make a statement.
Following President Jammeh's pledge to execute all death-row prisoners in The Gambia, our high commissioner in Banjul immediately raised his concerns with the then-Gambian Foreign Minister. On hearing of the execution of nine prisoners, the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my hon. Friend Alistair Burt, issued a statement expressing the British Government's concern, and calling for a halt to any further executions. Our high commissioner in Banjul has made representations to senior members of the Gambian Government to convey the strength of our concerns, including on behalf of the EU. Senior officials in London also made our position clear to the Gambian high commissioner in London. We will continue to apply appropriate pressure on the Government of The Gambia to help prevent further executions.
