The Government are requiring the installation of smart meters by the end of 2019 through an obligation on gas and electricity suppliers. It is establishing a detailed regulatory framework to underpin the roll-out. This includes the development of a minimum technical specification for smart meters, the establishment of a central body to handle communications with smart meters, a consumer engagement strategy, a data access and privacy regime and various consumer protections, including a requirement for an installation Code of Practice.
