The introduction of smart meters should support competition and enhance efficiency in the energy market. Smart meters should facilitate switching between suppliers, through the availability of more accurate and detailed information which will help consumers to seek out better tariff deals; and through the rationalisation of the arrangements for handling the change of supplier process. The availability of more detailed information should also encourage innovation and the entry of energy service companies into the energy market. In addition, smart meters will facilitate more efficient network management, demand shifting and the integration of renewables.
