To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has made to the Mongolian authorities on the freedom of the press and safety of journalists.
The UK Government are a strong supporter of freedom of opinion and expression, including on the internet. Freedom of speech and of the press is protected by law in Mongolia, and although Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) officials regularly have raised the importance of prioritising human rights, in general terms, with the Mongolian Government, press freedom and safety of journalists has not been raised specifically.
However, while we recognise that Mongolia has made significant strides towards meeting international human rights standards, no state should be complacent. We are aware of a recent report of an attack on eight journalists and camera operators from local television broadcaster Sky TV on
