To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what his Department considers to be a minimum credible nuclear deterrent.

The Strategic Defence and Security Review published in October 2010 concluded that we can meet the minimum requirement of an effective and credible level of deterrence with a reduced nuclear weapons capability. We therefore decided to cut the maximum number of warheads deployed on each deployed submarine from 48 to 40, and to reduce the number of operational missiles on each submarine to no more than eight.
