To ask Her Majesty's Government whether, in the light of the decision of both Houses of Parliament to sign up to the WRAP Hospitality and Food Service Voluntary Agreement to reduce food waste, the Department for Education will sign up to that agreement; and whether they will encourage catering contractors employed by the department to do the same.

The Department for Education signed up to the WRAP Hospitality and Food Service Voluntary Agreement in March 2012.

The department is committed to sustainable waste management, and is currently developing processes to increase the proportion of its food waste sent for anaerobic digestion and composting.

In April 2012, the department entered a new total facilities management contract, and will be actively encouraging its new catering suppliers to sign up to the agreement.

In 2011-12, the department reported an 89% recycling rate, which included food waste management.
