Advice on rural health matters is provided by departmental officials to Ministers across the range of their responsibilities for the national health service, public health and social care. The permanent secretary (Una O'Brien) provides overall leadership for the Department and is responsible to Ministers for this advice. The Director-General for Social, Local Government and Care Partnerships (David Behan) has the lead role in co-ordinating advice on rural health issues, as part of his responsibility for providing support to Ministers on wider cross-Government health issues.
