To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps she is taking to ensure that children do not become destitute as a result of having financial support withdrawn in the event of a failed application for asylum.

Support is not withdrawn in the circumstances described. Asylum seekers with children are supported by the UK Border Agency under section 95 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999. Eligibility to this support lasts until they leave the United Kingdom or they are granted leave to remain and can access the mainstream benefits system. Unaccompanied asylum seeking children are supported by local authorities irrespective of their immigration status.
