Business, Innovation and Skills written question – answered at on 3 July 2012.
To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills how many English applicants he expects will not secure a place at English universities for courses starting in September 2012.
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills does not forecast the number of applicants from England who will not get a place. The number of unsuccessful applicants this September will depend on a range of factors, such as the grades achieved in this summer's exams. Entry to higher education has always been a competitive process and universities, as independent and autonomous bodies, are responsible for their own admissions decisions. For decades, there have been more applications than places and this will be repeated this year.
