To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs how many fish farms were set up in each of the last five years.

The following numbers of fish farms were newly authorised to operate across the UK in the last five years:

2007 23
2008 46
2009 28
2010 29
2011 27

However, in some cases a new licence may reflect a change of ownership rather than a new farm being set up, and figures from the devolved Administrations may include authorisations of single businesses operating at more than one farm site.
