To ask the Secretary of State for Education

(1) how many decisions by head teachers to permanently exclude pupils were overturned by appeals panels in each year since 1997;

(2) how many pupils whose permanent exclusions had been overturned by appeals panels were readmitted by their schools in each year since 1997.

The available information, for 1997/98 to 2009/10, is shown in the tables. This includes the number of appeals against permanent exclusion that have been determined in favour of the parent/pupil and the numbers of appeals where reinstatement was directed.
