To ask the Secretary of State for Education how much his Department spent on (a) gas and (b) electricity bills in each of the last 10 years.

The Department for Education was formed in May 2010. The amount spent on utilities is detailed in the following table. Spend is detailed as follows against gas and electricity for the financial years 2010-11 to 2011-12.

Since its formation the Department has achieved significant reductions in its energy consumption. Between May 2010-11 and 2011-12 these reductions were 7% in electricity and 32% in gas consumption.
