To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs how many animals have been detected being illegally brought into the UK in each of the last five years.

The total numbers of animals that have been detected as being illegally brought into the UK in the last five years are as follows:

  2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 (January-May)
Dogs 132 129 91 110 163
Cats 84 79 65 46 48
Other mammals 0 3 4 5 1
Total 216 211 160 161 212

All animals that are found to have been illegally brought into the UK are immediately placed into quarantine as part of the robust disease control arrangements we have in place.
