To ask the Secretary of State for Justice what the cost was of court proceedings arising from the trial of drivers accused of making fraudulent insurance claims in (a) 1997, (b) 2002 and (c) 2011.

The offence of ‘making fraudulent insurance claims’ is likely to be proceeded against under section 1 of the Fraud Act 2006. This includes offenders who dishonestly make false representations to make gains for themselves or cause losses to another person.

The Ministry of Justice does not collate all details of proceedings. As a result it is not possible to specifically identify and cost proceedings that relate to drivers accused of making fraudulent insurance claims under section 1 of the Act. This information could be obtained only by examining all relevant court records of Her Majesty's Courts and Tribunals Service and would incur disproportionate cost.

Secretary of State

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
