The first objective in DEFRA’s business plan is to “support and develop British farming and encourage sustainable food production” and this commitment influences all of the policy work DEFRA undertakes. The plan outlines a number of areas in which we are taking action to promote increased domestic food production.

DEFRA is working on the “Green Food Project” which is a joint initiative between Government, industry, consumer and environmental organisations, because we recognise that neither increasing food production nor improving the environment are challenges for Government alone.
