The Department issued guidance and directions to national health service bodies in December 2009 on the cost of telephone calls, which prohibit the use of telephone numbers which charge people more than the equivalent cost of calling a geographical number to contact any part of the NHS. Where NHS bodies are charging people more, all reasonable steps should be taken to rectify this. The Department issued further guidance on 23 February 2012 clarifying these directions.
