DEFRA does not make such estimates. Local authorities are best placed to determine the waste management needs in their areas. Under the EU Landfill Directive, the UK is required to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill to 50% by 2013. The UK wide landfill target for 2013 is 17.8 million tonnes. We are on track to meeting this target.
