To ask the Secretary of State for Justice what assessment he has made of the effect on the prison estate of prisoners who were recalled having served their tariff.

As at 31 December 2011 the prison population in England and Wales included around 200 prisoners who had been recalled from life or IPP licence (having initially been released on licence after serving at least their minimum tariff).

These figures have been drawn from administrative IT systems which, as with any large scale recording system, are subject to possible errors with data entry and processing.
