To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what estimate his Department has made on the number of people living in poverty in Burkina Faso.

According to the latest available data from the World Bank (2003), it is estimated that 56.5% out of Burkina Faso's total population of 16.5 million are living below the international poverty line of $1.25 per day.

The Department for International Development (DFID) does not have an aid programme or a presence in Burkina Faso.

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
