To ask the Secretary of State for Justice how many witnesses were called to give evidence in (a) magistrates courts and (b) Crown courts in each year from 1997 to 2010.

Information about the total number of witnesses called to give evidence in the magistrates courts and Crown court is not held centrally, as it is not recorded by court staff electronically as part of their routine daily administrative duties.
