Transport written question – answered at on 20 December 2011.
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what estimate her Department has made of the change in the amount of biofuels which will be needed for transport fuel in order to meet the requirement of the renewable energy directive for 10% of transport fuel to come from renewable sources by 2020.
holding answer
The renewable energy directive (RED) contains a target for the UK to source 10% of energy used in transport from renewable sources by 2020. The contribution of biofuels made from wastes, residues, non-food cellulosic material and ligno-celluiosic material will count twice towards this target.
Given uncertainties over the sustainability of all biofuels and the best deployment across sectors we have not, at this stage, amended the renewable transport fuel obligation biofuel supply targets. The Secretary of State for Transport, Justine Greening is obliged under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligations (Amendment) Order 2011 to come forward with proposals for measures to ensure delivery of the transport requirements of the RED for the period 2014 to 2020 at a later date.
