International Development written question – answered at on 19 December 2011.
To ask the Secretary of State for International Development how the development of a new European standard for sustainable and traceable cocoa will take into account the interests of smallholder cocoa producers in developing countries and ensure they are consulted and involved in the standard setting process; and if he will make a statement.
I agree that the interests of smallholder cocoa producers should be considered in any new standard for sustainable and traceable cocoa. However, the proposed new European standard for sustainable and traceable cocoa would be developed by the standards body for the industry itself. This body is independent.
