To ask the Minister for Women and Equalities for what reason the need for political balance in respect of the composition of the Commissioners of the Equality and Human Rights Commission was not included as an issue in the recent public consultation; and if she will make a statement.

Public appointments should be on the basis of merit, not political affiliation. As we set out in our consultation, we want to see a smaller board with stronger corporate skills and experience, gained in the private, voluntary and public sectors.
