Education written question – answered at on 13 December 2011.
To ask the Secretary of State for Education what assessment he has made of the appropriate level for the leaving care grant set by local authorities; and whether he is taking steps to ensure that variability between local authorities in setting such grants is reduced.
The Department does not collect information on the level of setting up home allowances, sometimes known as leaving care grants, determined by individual local authorities. Statutory guidance on the Care Leavers (England) Regulations 2010 emphasises how important it is for local authorities to provide transparent and accessible information about the leaving care support they offer, including through the payment of setting up home allowances. The guidance explains that local authorities should consult young people, particularly through Children in Care Councils, in deciding the right level of allowance.
