To ask the Secretary of State for Health what assessment he has made of future staffing levels of neonatal units for premature and ill babies in NHS hospitals.

Work force planning is a matter for local national health service organisations. They are best placed to assess the health needs of their local health community and will commission the required number of training places to develop the work force to meet those needs.

A safety and quality assurance process has been developed to ensure that any significant change proposed in the clinical work force has involved clinicians at all levels, maximising their engagement, leadership and sign off.
