To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what his policy is on UK accession to the 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage; and if he will make a statement.

The British Government have adopted the Annex of the Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage as best practice for marine archaeology but we do not believe that the case for ratification of the convention by the UK has been made. This position will continue to be kept under review.
