To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many people her Department employs who are aged over (a) 55 and (b) 65.

On 31 October 2011 the central Department and its seven executive agencies employed:

(a) 3,490 members of staff who were aged 55 to 64; and

(b) 145 members of staff aged 65 and over.

Of this total, the central Department employed 235 members of staff aged 55 to 64, and eight members of staff aged 65 and over.
