To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they will seek to ensure that the proposed Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care Scheme for Assured Voluntary Regulators is accepted as an alternative and equivalent to statutory regulation; and, if so, how.

The proposed system of assured voluntary registration will be designed to encourage high standards of practice, and to drive further improvement in standards. It will complement, rather than replace, existing systems of assurance.

Discussions are already ongoing between the department and the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence about how policy on any qualified provider will take account of, and link to, assured voluntary registers.
