To ask the Secretary of State for Health what plans he has to investigate the reasons for low levels of pharmacological treatment for hepatitis C following the publication of Professor Sir Mike Richards CBE report on the extent and causes of international variations in drug usage; and if he will make a statement.

The Department is currently considering appropriate next steps following the report from Professor Sir Mike Richards.

Professor Martin Lombard, the national clinical director for liver disease, is leading the development of work to curb the rising trends in liver disease. Part of this work is intended to ensure that the prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment of hepatitis C are improved.
