To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what action the Government is taking to ensure service families have access to affordable credit.

Ministry of Defence officials are working with, among others, the UK's Credit Reference Agencies, Royal Mail and the British Banking Association, to establish a system to improve the validation of credit histories for armed forces personnel. This in turn should improve the ability of the service community to access mortgages and to apply for mainstream credit. We have also encouraged the Council of Mortgage Lenders and the Building Society Association to remind their front-line staff of the unique nature of life in the armed forces and thereby help to prevent the service community being disadvantaged.
