To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what discussions she has had with (a) her EU counterparts and (b) ministerial colleagues on the implementation of the welfare of laying hens directive.

Discussions at an EU level are ongoing and the UK is fully engaged with the Commission, other member states and the devolved Administrations in finding a practical enforcement solution. We need to protect those producers across the EU, who will have complied with the ban, from the risk of competitive distortion in favour of those who will have maintained illegal production after 1 January 2012.
