To ask the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change whether smart meter rental companies will be regulated.

Ofgem is currently undertaking a review of metering arrangements in the gas and electricity sectors which includes consideration of the role of meter asset providers or “meter rental companies”. Under the current arrangements, suppliers are obliged to ensure their meter providers are “fit and proper” to undertake these activities.

The Government will consider any recommendations made by Ofgem as part of their review of current metering arrangements, in the context of the wider changes to the regulatory framework in the gas and electricity markets being made as part of the smart meter programme.
