Environment Food and Rural Affairs written question – answered at on 22 November 2011.
To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what steps she has taken to encourage consistency in the fees charged by local authorities for the return of stray dogs.
Under the Environmental Protection (Stray Dogs) Regulations 1992, local authorities are entitled to charge the owner of a stray dog all expenses incurred during the dog’s detention, plus a prescribed amount of £25. The length of each dog’s detention may vary and additional costs such as veterinary treatment may also be incurred. It is therefore difficult for every local authority to charge a similar amount.
