Communities and Local Government written question – answered at on 9 November 2011.
To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government under what budget headings he expects the estimated savings resulting from the abolition of the Audit Commission to be made.
The abolition of the Audit Commission will benefit local authorities directly by removing the need for a “topslice” of audit fees to fund the commission's corporate centre, as well as ending government grants allocated to the commission to undertake certain other functions. The abolition of burdensome inspection, such as comprehensive area assessment, is already saving taxpayers money. Further detail on savings and costs will be included in the impact assessment accompanying the draft legislation that we intend to publish in due course.
