To ask the Secretary of State for Health what assessment he has made of the effect of a reduction in onward transmission of hepatitis C on NHS costs.

We have not assessed the effect of a reduction in onward transmission of hepatitis C on costs to the national health service. However, a reduction in hepatitis C transmission appears likely to reduce NHS costs both by decreasing in the medium, term the need for drug therapy and in the long term, the burden of serious liver disease.
