The Department for International Development (DfID) spend on consultants in each financial year since 2007-08 is set out in the table below. The total spend figures cannot be broken down between UK and overseas without incurring disproportionate cost. Information on a comparable basis is not available prior to 2007-08.

Year Consultancy Spending £'000s
2007-08 21,200
2008-09 24,500
2009-10 19,100
2010-11 1,406

The drop in spend for 2010-11 is due to application of the central government definition of consultancy and the introduction of a stringent business case process to ensure consultancy is managed effectively and approved only where it is deemed to be an operational necessity.
