To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills how many external training courses staff of his Department attended in the last 12 months; and what the cost to the public purse was of each course.

Decisions on individuals' development needs are made locally, guided by the Department's Learning and Development Strategy and the central guidance from Civil Service Learning. In 2010-11 average spend per head across BIS and all its agencies was £937.

Details of individual attendance on courses is not held centrally. This could be provided only at disproportionate cost.
