Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs written question – answered at on 12 October 2011.
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent representations he has made to the government of Algeria on religious freedom for Christians in that country.
The Government raise human rights, including freedom of religion and belief, with the Government of Algeria regularly, both in bilateral discussions and through the EU. Following a recent visit by Stefan Füle, the European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, the EU and the Algerian Government have increased dialogue on these issues, by establishing a sub-committee on security and human rights.
We continue to monitor religious freedom in the middle east and North African region closely and will raise this issue as part of our discussions with the Algerian Government.
