The Government published “High Speed Rail: Investing in Britain's Future” in February 2011. That set out proposals for a high speed rail network in a Y shape from London to Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester with a direct connection to Heathrow airport and a link to HS1. The Government believe that there is strong strategic case for such a network as it would boost economic growth, spread prosperity and provide an attractive alternative to domestic aviation. Following the end of consultation on 29 July, we are considering the responses to consultation and expect to announce a decision on the way forward later in the year.
