Communities and Local Government written question – answered at on 6 September 2011.
To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government what ministerial responsibilities the Minister for Cities has in relation to London.
As Minister for Cities I will champion the economic, social and environmental role of cities including London and support them in seizing the opportunities to create growth and prosperity across the country. London is clearly our largest city in terms of its population and its economy—but it also has different issues and a very different governance settlement from other cities. Therefore I will initially focus on the core cities and their surrounding areas. The core cities represent the eight largest cities outside of London (based on the population of the Primary Urban Area): Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, and Sheffield.
