The UK is committed to strengthening the institutional framework for sustainable development and enhancing the system of international environmental governance. We believe this will require an enhanced role for UNEP as part of a strong environmental pillar within the broader context of strengthening overall sustainable development governance. The UK is engaged in open discussion of broad reform options to make the current system more effective and efficient and will continue to play an active role in preparatory negotiations on this issue in the run up to Rio+20 next June where a major theme is ‘the institutional framework for sustainable development'.
