Transport written question – answered at on 19 July 2011.
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what estimate he has made of the number of uninsured drivers in each of the last three years.
We estimate that from a comparison of the Motor Insurance Database operated by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) and the DVLA's vehicle's database that around 1.4 million vehicles are uninsured. This figure has remained constant for the past three years but is a reduction from an estimated 2 million in 2005.
