To ask Her Majesty's Government how many alleged pirates have been detained during anti-piracy operations off Somalia by the Royal Navy; how many of those have been subsequently released; and how many have been handed over to the authorities of which jurisdictions.

I refer the noble Lord to the answer I gave on 23 May 2011 (Hansard, col. WA391). Since then a further three suspected pirates have been encountered by the Royal Navy during a boarding operation. Following detailed analysis of all physical evidence, witness statements and options for prosecution, these individuals were released as it was assessed that a successful prosecution was unlikely.
