Communities and Local Government written question – answered at on 6 July 2011.
To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government what steps his Department is taking to monitor (a) new charges and (b) changes in the level of charges for older people's services by local authorities.
Local authorities are democratically elected and, as such, they are independent from central Government and are responsible for their own finances. It is for individual councils in consultation with their communities to decide on what services they provide for older people.
Notwithstanding that, Ministers believe that councils should not be looking to increasing charges simply to deliver essential frontline services, or as an alternative to cutting out waste.
