To ask Her Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the European Union's decision to impose a travel ban and a freeze of assets on members of the Government of Syria; and what impact this will have whilst it excludes President Assad.

The UK was heavily engaged in the European Union decision to impose a travel ban and assets freeze on 13 individuals in the Syrian regime who are responsible for the violence. On 13 May 2011 the Syrian Ambassador to London was told that if the violence does not stop immediately and all political prisoners released, the EU would take further measures including sanctions targeted at the highest levels of the government.
