International Development written question – answered at on 16 May 2011.
To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what steps he is taking to enable children who do not have access to education to do so.
The Department for International Development is working to support partner governments to overcome the barriers that children face in accessing education. We are investing in methods that are proven to work, such as reducing the cost of education, and we are pursuing flexible and responsive approaches to education in situations of fragility or conflict, including through partnerships with non-state providers.
As stated in the DFID publication ‘UK Aid: Changing Lives, Delivering Results’, we pledge to support at least nine million children in primary school, over half of whom will be girls, and two million children in secondary school by 2014.
