To ask the Secretary of State for International Development if he will promote a reformed approach to the World Bank's work on climate change including a reduction in finance for fossil fuels; and whether he raised this issue at the World Bank Spring meetings.

The World Bank’s Energy Strategy must meet the twin goals of sustainable energy production and addressing the chronic shortfall in energy that exists in many countries. We therefore strongly support a reformed approach to the World Bank's work on climate change including a shift away from fossil fuel lending and an increase in lending for clean energy.
In his statement to the World Bank Development Committee the Secretary of State for International Development emphasised the bank's role to support the global climate change agenda. He said that the bank should promote energy efficiency and generation from renewable energy sources.

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
