To ask Her Majesty's Government how much each visit by the President of the Republic of Ireland to the United Kingdom in the past five years has cost.

The President of the Republic of Ireland has visited the UK a total of 16 times over the past five years. All of these have been either private or working visits and none was as a guest of Her Majesty's Government. Therefore no programme or organisational costs have fallen to the Government. As with many other heads of state, President McAleese receives police protection when in this country. For security reasons we do not comment on the costs of individual protection operations.
