The Food Standards Agency is currently funding research to determine whether changes in skin barrier function and mutations in the filaggrin gene are linked to the development of food allergy, including peanut allergy.

This could allow those at high risk of developing food allergy to be identified and result in specific advice being given to reduce risk.

The results of this research are expected in 2013.
